Vernal equinox

The equinox that occurs in March is normally referred to as the vernal equinox. This is unfortunate, because of the meaning of the word vernal:

ver′nal adj. of or occurring in spring.

Obviously it never occurred to the person who coined this term for the equinox that the Southern Hemisphere exists. Because everybody in the Southern Hemisphere knows that the spring equinox occurs in September, not March.
